The advantages of this type of battery are great.
- After 800 charging cycles, still 80% of initial capacity. NiMh batteries often fail after about 200 cycles. The service life is 2 to 4 times longer than standard NiMh batteries, for a very limited initial extra cost. We therefore give a 12-month warranty on these Li-ion batteries. iRobot only gives a 6-month warranty on the original batteries.
- Minimal charge loss, less than 1% per month, when not in use. Self-discharge in NiMh batteries often exceeds 30% per month.
- Various protections built in (against overcharging, too deep discharge, too high temperatures, too high voltages, etc) giving higher reliability and safety.
- NiMh batteries often fail after a few deep discharges. Due to the built-in protection, this cannot happen with these Li-ion batteries.
